Install and get started

Install the extension

1. Get Privacy Thing from the official store for Chrome or Firefox.
2. Complete the browser's installation prompt.
3. Pin the extension icon for quick access to the current site.

Privacy Thing works locally in your browser. You do not need an account.

Optional permission in Firefox

Privacy Thing works in Firefox without the optional userScripts permission.

With this permission, Privacy Thing can apply supported language and time settings earlier during a site's first load. This reduces the first-load timing gap, but it does not guarantee that every early script will see changed values.

You can grant the permission later in Privacy Thing Settings.

Create your first Regional Preset

A Regional Preset stores location, language, and time-zone values.

1. Open Regional Presets.
2. Select Generate preset or Add manually.
3. Review the saved values.
4. Save the preset.

Place search and the map require separate consent. You can enter the preset manually without contacting those services.

Assign the preset to a site

1. Open Domain Rules.
2. Add a rule for a host or domain pattern.
3. Select the Regional Preset.
4. Save the rule.
5. Reload the site.

Check the result

Open the Privacy Thing popup on the site. Then open X-Ray.

The popup identifies the source in control. X-Ray records detected use of the browser data and functions that Privacy Thing supports.
