Troubleshooting

Diagnose preset, compatibility, map, and X-Ray problems.

A site uses a different preset

  1. Open the popup and confirm the host in the active tab.
  2. Make sure Privacy Thing is on for that host.
  3. Check the source in control: Trusted Site, Domain Rule, Firefox Container, Default Rule, or no active source.
  4. Check for a more specific Domain Rule.
  5. In Firefox, check the active container assignment.
  6. Reload the tab after correcting the configuration.

A change is not visible

  1. Reload the tab.
  2. Repeat the action that should use the changed setting.
  3. Open X-Ray and confirm the source in control.
  4. Check whether the relevant supported category shows activity.

A settings change cannot alter values that the current document read before the change.

Language or time settings miss the first load in Firefox

  1. Open Privacy Thing Settings.
  2. Check the optional userScripts permission.
  3. Grant it if you want supported language and time settings to apply earlier.
  4. Close the test tab and open it again.

Privacy Thing works without this permission. Granting it reduces the first-load timing gap, but it does not guarantee that every early script will see changed values.

A site stops working

  1. Disable Service Worker blocking for the site's Domain Rule.
  2. Set Shared Workers to Native mode.
  3. Reload the tab.
  4. If the problem remains, select Turn off Privacy Thing.
  5. Reload the tab again.

If global turn-off fixes the site, turn Privacy Thing on again. Re-enable one protection setting at a time to identify the incompatible setting.

  1. Check consent for external map services.
  2. Check the network connection.
  3. Try again later.

An outage at Nominatim or OpenFreeMap does not affect saved presets or local rule matching.

X-Ray shows no activity

  1. Reload the tab to start a new activity record.
  2. Repeat the action you want to inspect.
  3. Check whether Privacy Thing supports the relevant category in your browser.
  4. Check whether the tab contains a browser-protected page.

No activity means only that X-Ray did not detect a supported category during the current page load.
